Our 8‑Application Program, Timed for Hernando

Timing is most of the job. These windows come from Mississippi State and University of Tennessee research for our latitude, miss them and you spend the year chasing weeds you could have prevented.

Visit 1 · Jan, Feb

We clear out winter weeds, chickweed, henbit, and sticker weed, while they are still small, and lay down a barrier that stops spring weeds before they come up.

Visit 2 · Feb, Mar

Crabgrass prevention. Crabgrass sprouts as soon as the ground warms, which here is late February into the first week of March. On a sloped Hernando lot this one matters twice as much, crabgrass takes the thin, dry high ground first.

Visit 3 · Apr, May

First feeding of the year, with the rate matched to your actual lawn size. Hernando lots run bigger than Southaven’s, and a hillside yard does not feed evenly from top to bottom.

Visit 4 · May, Jun

Round two of weed prevention, about six weeks behind the first, so the barrier holds through summer. Plus feeding and nutsedge control.

Visit 5 · Jul, Aug

Summer feeding built for our heat. We use a slow‑release product so it feeds steadily instead of burning, and on slopes, slow‑release is the difference between feeding the lawn and feeding the ditch.

Visit 6 · Sep, Oct

Winter weed prevention, and this one has a hard deadline. It has to go down before September 1. Miss it and you get patchy, light‑green clumps of grass all winter.

Visit 7 · Oct, Nov

Fall follow‑up. This is the visit that keeps sticker weed out of your yard, it sprouts in fall, sits unnoticed all winter, then stings bare feet in April.

Visit 8 · Nov, Dec

Lime, but only where it is actually needed. The high ground in Hernando is sour and wants lime. The creek bottoms are close to neutral and do not. We test rather than blanket the whole yard.

Plans from $30.90 / Month

Or $46.35 per treatment. Every Hernando lawn is measured and priced to size, which matters here, where lots run bigger than the county average. Free service calls between visits.

Why Hernando Lawns Behave the Way They Do

Hernando is the hilliest town in DeSoto County, there is over 150 feet of elevation between the low ground on the west side and the courthouse square. Almost everything that frustrates homeowners here traces back to that.

You Live on a Hill

Hernando has more slope than any of its neighbors. Water runs off before it soaks in, so the tops and middles of slopes brown out first in July while the bottom stays green. Granular products wash downhill in a heavy rain. Watering has to be split into shorter cycles so it soaks instead of running.

Two Different Soils, One Yard

The high ground here is sour and genuinely needs lime. The creek bottoms, along Hurricane Creek and the low draws, are close to neutral and do not. A blanket lime application is half wasted on a Hernando lot. We test first.

There Is a Hard Layer Underneath

A couple of feet down, the high ground turns into a dense layer roots cannot push through. Water perches on it in late winter, then the shallow ground above it dries out fast in summer. Soggy in February, burnt in August, same yard.

Most of the Topsoil Is Already Gone

Hernando was farmed hard for a century before the subdivisions arrived, and the county soil maps show most of the sloped ground here as eroded. That means thin, heavy surface dirt that crusts over after rain and packs down under mower tires. Aeration earns its keep here.

Bigger Lots, Bigger Job

The typical Hernando lot runs about a third of an acre, roughly 36% larger than the typical Southaven lot, and about one parcel in nine inside the city limits is an acre or more. Pricing that ignores lot size is guessing.

Armyworms

They swept through DeSoto County a few years back and can chew a lawn down to nothing in about two days. They love bermuda and hit new lawns hardest. We watch for them in late summer and treat with a spray, granules just fall past them.

What Grows Well in Hernando

We sit in a stretch of the country where grass is genuinely hard to grow, too hot in summer for northern grasses, too cold in winter for southern ones. Nothing here stays perfect on its own.

Bermudagrass

The default on full‑sun Hernando lawns. Tough and it fills back in fast, but it is hungry, it needs steady feeding to stay thick, and it will not grow in shade. On a big open lot it is usually the right call.

Zoysia

Common around the Memphis metro. Finer blades than bermuda and it handles a little more shade, but it is slow to recover once damaged. With zoysia, preventing a problem is worth far more than fixing one.

St. Augustine, Skip It

Mississippi State tells homeowners in counties that touch Tennessee not to plant it. Our winters are too cold for it. If someone is trying to sell it to you around here, ask why.

Lawn Advice Online Does Not Work Here

Hernando sits right on the line between northern and southern grass country, so general advice you find online is usually wrong for us. Our schedule comes from Mississippi State and University of Tennessee research for this exact area.

The Timing Has Shifted

Our area officially got warmer a couple of years ago, and that moved the feeding schedule about two weeks earlier. If you are still going off advice from ten years back, your timing is off.

It was all weeds when I moved in, and after being treated, I have no weeds in my yard at all.

Just like your lawn, we have standards with our appearance as well. All of our lawn care technicians are uniformed and professional.

Hernando Lawn Care, Common Questions

Straight answers on pricing, timing, and licensing.

Our program starts at $30.90 a month, or $46.35 per treatment. Price depends on lawn size, and Hernando lots run larger than average, so we measure yours and give you an exact number free, usually in a few minutes.

Yes. Our plans run on an annual service agreement. Full terms, including renewal and cancellation, are on our Terms of Service page.

Yes. About one parcel in nine inside Hernando city limits is an acre or larger, and a good share of the city is still zoned rural. We price by measured size rather than a flat residential rate.

That is the classic Hernando hillside. Water runs off the high ground before it soaks in, so the top of the slope dries out first and stays hungry. It is fixed with aeration, split watering cycles, and slow‑release feeding, not with more fertilizer.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and in Hernando it can be both in the same yard. The high ground here is sour and wants lime; the creek bottoms are close to neutral and do not. We test instead of blanketing.

Late February into the first week of March for crabgrass, and before September 1 for winter weeds. Those two dates decide how your lawn looks the rest of the year.

We come back out and re‑treat at no charge. Free service calls between scheduled visits are part of every program.

All of Hernando, plus the surrounding DeSoto County communities, Olive Branch, Southaven, Horn Lake, Nesbit, Walls, Lewisburg, and Byhalia.

The quality of the service really stood out—my yard looks clean, fresh, and professionally maintained. The lines are crisp, everything was evenly cut, and they took the time to make sure the entire space looked polished. They didn’t rush the job and paid attention to the details, which definitely shows in the final result.

What I also appreciated was how efficient and respectful the team was while on-site. No mess left behind, everything was cleaned up, and they made sure the yard looked better than they found it.

Overall, excellent service from start to finish. Reliable, professional, and they deliver exactly what you’d expect—and more. Can’t wait until my next service provided by Lawn Jox and would recommend them to anyone looking for quality lawn care.

Lawn Jix now takes care of everything that has to do with making my yard look great!! I started out with their lawn spray for weeds and fertilize, then had them start mowing and now in addition I have contracted them to care for my flower beds. They do a great job all the way around and my yard looks great!!!I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn service company for whatever your needs are. They are also very reasonably priced.

We greatly appreciate the service and attention to detail that Lawn Jox provides. We recently had some weeds sprouting up in the driveway cracks and asked if they could tend to those. Not only did they take care of those areas but they even tackled some of the areas in front of our flower bed that were starting to grow some weeds. We’ve been with Lawn Jox the last 5 years and are pleased overall!
