How Lawn Jox started
In 2007 Melvin Gunter and his wife Kim started Lawn Jox with one truck. Melvin cut grass evenings and weekends around another job. Kim ran the office from the first day. It did not stay a side job for long, and when there was more work than the weekends could hold, Melvin went at it full time.
Melvin is an Air Force veteran. He and Kim built the business together for seventeen years, until Kim passed away in 2024. Melvin runs it today, out of the same town they started in.

Why we do it this way
The right size equipment
While the rest of the industry kept buying bigger machines, Melvin went the other direction. Small trucks, the right size equipment for the job, and routes tight enough that a crew spends the day working instead of driving between jobs.
Treatment is the real work
A cut lawn is a tidy lawn. It is not a thick, green, weed free one. That takes treatment on a schedule, and it is a licensed skill rather than a mowing one. We started treating lawns around 2013, and it has become the heart of the business.
The name on the truck
Lawn Jox has never been a franchise and has never been a call center. When something goes wrong with your lawn, you are calling the people whose name is on the truck.
