When Should Bermuda Be Fertilized in North Mississippi?
Feed It While It Is Growing. Quit Before It Has to Get Ready for Winter.
Bermuda is a warm season grass, so its whole calendar runs backwards from what people expect. It wants nitrogen in the heat of the summer and it wants you to leave it alone at both ends of the year.
Feed it too early and you push soft growth right into a late frost. Feed it too late and it goes into winter soft, which is how you end up with dead circles staring at you in April.
Here is roughly how our year runs. The dates move with the weather, which is the whole argument for going by the lawn instead of the calendar.
The Feeding Calendar
Green-up and first frost are the bookends. Everything else fits in between.
Wait for Real Green-Up
Do not put nitrogen on a lawn that is still half asleep. Bermuda wants soil holding around 65 degrees and the yard actually greening, which here is usually mid to late April. Feed it earlier and you are mostly feeding winter weeds.
May Through August Is the Push
This is when it grows and when it actually uses what you give it. Several lighter applications across the summer beat one heavy dump, which just gives you surge growth and disease.
Stop Nitrogen by Mid September
It needs about six weeks to harden off before frost, and frost here is early to mid November. Nitrogen after mid September keeps it growing soft when it ought to be shutting down.
Potassium Late Is Different
Late potassium is fine and it helps. It builds roots and cold tolerance without pushing top growth, which is exactly what you want heading into winter.
Do Not Feed a Thirsty Lawn
Fertilizer on dry, stressed grass in August will burn it. If you have not watered and none is in the forecast, wait. The lawn cannot use it and you are just paying to damage it.
