How to Fix Dog Urine Spots in Your Lawn
Yellow in the Middle, Dark Green Around the Edge
You know the ones. A dead spot the size of a dinner plate with a ring of grass around it that looks better than anything else in the yard.
That ring is the tell. Dog urine is heavy on nitrogen, and nitrogen is fertilizer. Right where it lands there is too much of it and the grass burns. A few inches out it thins down to about the right amount and the grass loves it.
So this is a concentration problem, not a chemical burn from something exotic, and it is fixable.
What Actually Helps
Some of this you do at the spot. Some of it is just how the yard is set up.
Water It Right Behind Her
The single most effective thing, and it is free. A bucket or a hose on the spot within a few minutes dilutes it before it can burn. Not always practical, but when you can, do it.
Pick a Spot
A gravel or mulch corner that the dog learns to use keeps it off the turf entirely. Takes some training, works permanently.
Do Not Buy the Supplements
The pills and drops that claim to fix this either do nothing or work by messing with your dog's water balance. Ask your vet before you put anything in a dog for the sake of the grass.
Thick Bermuda Heals Faster
Bermuda spreads by runners, so a healthy lawn closes a burn spot on its own in a few weeks in the growing season. A thin lawn just leaves the hole open for a weed.
Female Dogs Are Not the Problem
It is not the dog's sex, it is the squat. Dogs that empty in one place cause spots. Dogs that mark in several places spread it thin enough that you never notice.
Watch the Traffic Lanes
Where the dog runs the fence line you get packed soil and worn grass, and people blame urine for it. That one is compaction, and it needs aeration, not a different dog.
What Fixes It
Fertilization & Weed Control
A thick, well-fed lawn grows over burn spots on its own instead of leaving bare ground for weeds.
Core Aeration
For the packed-down run lines along the fence where the dog patrols.
