Why Does My Lawn Have Dollar Spot?

Little Bleached Spots and Cobwebs in the Morning Dew

Dollar spot is a fungus, and it is one of the few lawn problems that will tell you exactly what it is if you go outside early enough.

The spots are small, about the size of a silver dollar, straw colored and sunk in a little. Get out there while the dew is still down and you will usually see fine white webbing across them. By nine in the morning that is gone and it just looks like scattered dead spots.

Leave it and the spots run together into bigger patches. That is usually when the phone rings.

How to Know It Is Dollar Spot

Two of these confirm it. The rest are why it showed up in your yard.

The Hourglass on the Blade

Pull one blade from the edge of a spot. Dollar spot leaves a bleached band straight across it with a reddish brown edge, pinched in the middle like an hourglass. Nothing else in a bermuda lawn does that.

Webbing at First Light

Fine white threads across the spots at sunup, gone a couple hours later. If you see it, do not mow. The mower will carry it across the rest of the yard.

It Is Hungry

Dollar spot goes after underfed lawns. Getting the nitrogen right is genuinely part of controlling it, not just something we say to sell you fertilizer.

The Grass Stays Wet Too Long

Warm days, cool nights, heavy dew sitting until nine or ten. That is our spring and our fall. Watering in the evening keeps it wet even longer and makes the whole thing worse.

Water Early, Water Deep

Short daily watering keeps the top wet and the roots shallow. One or two long soakings early in the morning puts down the same water and gives the fungus a lot less time to work.

Same Spots Every Year

It lives in the thatch and soil, so the low shaded corners that dry out slow light up again and again. Those are worth treating before you see it, not after.

What Fixes It

Lawn Disease Control

Fungicide for dollar spot, brown patch and large patch, put down when the weather is setting up for disease instead of after the damage is done.

Fertilization & Weed Control

Steady nitrogen is part of the fix. A hungry lawn is a dollar spot lawn.

Core Aeration

Cuts down thatch and helps the surface dry off faster in the morning, which shortens the window the fungus needs.
