How Do I Kill Nutsedge?
The Stuff in Your Garage Will Not Touch It
Nutsedge is not a grass. It is a sedge, which is a whole different plant, and the broadleaf weed killer sitting in your garage was never made to do anything to it. That is why people spray it three times and watch it keep growing.
Under every plant is a string of little tubers, the nutlets it gets its name from. One plant can put down dozens of them. Pull the top off and every nutlet stays right where it was, ready to send up something new.
It is not hopeless. It just takes the right product, more than once, and fixing whatever is keeping that spot wet.

What Works and What Makes It Worse
The first two are the mistakes almost everybody makes before they call us.
Do Not Pull It
Pulling snaps the shoot off and leaves the whole tuber chain in the ground. Worse, stirring them up wakes them up. Most people who pull it end up with more of it than they started with.
It Takes a Sedge Product
You need something built for sedges, sprayed on a plant that is actively growing so it moves down into the tubers instead of just burning the leaf. Regular lawn weed killer does close to nothing.
Once Is Never Enough
The tubers do not all come up at the same time. They stagger out across the season, so a June treatment does nothing for a nutlet that wakes up in August. Repeat trips are how you wear the population down.
Spray It While It Is Growing
It has to be growing to carry the product down. Hit it late in the season when it is already slowing and you have mostly wasted the trip.
Find the Water
Nutsedge lives where the ground stays wet. Low spots, under the downspout, over a leaking irrigation line. If the wet stays, it comes back no matter how well we treat it.
Thicken the Bermuda
It grows faster than everything around it, so it stands out worst where the turf is thin. Thick bermuda crowds it and hides it while the treatments do their work.
What Fixes It
Fertilization & Weed Control
Sedge treatments through the growing season, plus the feeding that gets your bermuda competing again.
Nutsedge Identification
Not sure that is what you have? Roll the stem between your fingers. Our ID guide walks through the six tells.
Core Aeration
Packed ground holds water right at the surface, which is exactly what nutsedge wants.
