How to Get Rid of Dandelions
The Yellow Ones Are Easy. It Is the Ones You Cannot See Yet.
By the time you see the yellow flower the plant has been down there a while, and by the time it turns into a white puffball it has already handed you next year’s problem.
Dandelions have a taproot that can run a foot deep. Snap it off at the surface and the piece left in the ground grows a new plant, which is why digging feels productive and mostly is not.
What Works on Them
Timing on this one matters more than most people expect.
Fall Is the Best Time to Spray
In fall the plant is pulling everything down into that taproot to store for winter, so it carries the herbicide down with it. A fall application does more than a spring one, and almost nobody does it.
Spring Works, It Just Takes More
Spray in spring and you are fighting a plant pushing energy upward. It still works, it just usually takes a repeat trip, and you want it before the flowers turn to seed heads.
Digging Needs the Whole Root
If you are going to dig, get the whole taproot, and go after a good rain when the ground is soft. Leave two inches of it behind and you will see that plant again.
Do Not Mow Off the Puffballs
Mowing a yard full of seed heads is how you plant them everywhere. If they have gone to seed, bag that cut instead of mulching it.
They Like Thin, Hard Ground
Dandelions take the spots where turf gave up, which is usually compacted soil or an area that stays too dry. Fix the ground and you get a lot fewer of them.
Pre-Emergent Helps, Partly
A fall pre-emergent knocks down new dandelions coming from seed. It does nothing to the established ones already down there, so you need both.

Dandelions move into hard ground. Pulling plugs takes that away from them.
