Dallisgrass forms coarse, flat-growing clumps that spread outward in a ring, and it is one of the hardest weeds to get out of bermuda in north Mississippi. It is a perennial, it grows from underground rhizomes, and it shrugs off the products that handle crabgrass.
The clumps grow faster than the lawn around them, so they look untidy within a day or two of mowing, and the seed heads carry dark specks that look as though the plant has been dusted with pepper.
Because it is a perennial with rhizomes, digging it out rarely works. Any piece of rhizome left behind starts a new clump. It generally takes repeat treatment across a season, timed to the plant rather than the calendar.

Crabgrass is an annual and dies at the first frost. Dallisgrass is a perennial. If the same clump is in the same spot next season, it is dallisgrass.

Peppered Seed Heads
Seed stalks carry dark specks that look like ground pepper scattered along them. That is the giveaway once it heads out.

Pre-Emergent Will Not Touch It
Pre-emergent stops crabgrass seed from germinating. Dallisgrass returns from rhizomes already in the ground, so it comes up regardless.
