Fall armyworms do not gradually thin a lawn. They eat it. A heavy infestation can strip a bermuda lawn to stubble in two or three days, and homeowners routinely describe it as the grass dying overnight.

They arrive in the Mid-South in waves, usually from midsummer into early autumn, and when they arrive they hit whole neighborhoods at once. If your neighbor is talking about it, check your own yard the same day.

The good news is that armyworms eat the blade, not the crown or the root. Bermuda that was healthy going in usually recovers. What lasts is whatever moves into the thin turf afterwards.

How to Catch Them Early

An Upside-Down Y on the Head

Fall armyworm caterpillars carry a pale inverted Y marking on the front of the head. That is the field identification.
