Mosquitoes are working their way out of hibernation as temperatures warm up. It won’t be long now before they are annoying you and your guests during that Memorial Day cookout and every other event you host this year. Luckily, there are some awesome tips to help bring down the mosquito population and prevent them from reproducing.
Make a Mosquito Trap
Believe it or not, mosquito traps are actually quite easy to make. All you need is an empty two-liter soda bottle, tape, and a cutting tool.
- Cut the top of the soda bottle off.
- Place the top half into the bottom half.
- Tape the two halves together
- Add one cup of water to one cup of sugar
- Add one teaspoon of yeast.
Mosquitos will be attracted to the smell of the concoction and enter the trap through the inverted top half of the soda bottle. Once inside, they will not be able to escape. Place a few of these around your yard or in your house to catch those sneaky ones that get inside.
Eliminate Standing Water
When it comes to effective mosquito control, standing water is your number one concern. Female mosquitoes deposit their eggs in areas of standing water after it rains. Places that make great mosquito nurseries include birdbaths, ponds, kiddie pools, flower pots, old tires, children’s toys, animal waterers, and rain barrels. It doesn’t take much water for mosquito eggs to hatch, which they will do in just 3 days. By taking standing water out of the picture you can dramatically limit the amount of mosquitoes in your area. Take it a step further and ask your friends and neighbors to get involved as well so you can bring down the mosquito population in your area.
Invite Bats and Swallows
The enemy of my enemy is my friend, someone once said. Why not apply that logic to mosquitoes? Mosquito eating animals such as bats, swallows, and purple martins all dine on mosquitoes as part of their diet. Make them feel welcome by putting up a few bat houses and purple martin houses. You can attract swallows by putting up bird boxes that face open areas of land.
In case you live on a farm or have outdoor animals, you might need to keep standing water around for them to drink. In this scenario you can drop in mosquito larvicide pellets that can be purchased at any hardware store. These pellets kill mosquito larvae for several months but are harmless to animals.
